Research Description

Our research aims to uncover the roles of RNA molecules in gene expression and genome maintenance. Our recent emphasis is on piRNAs—small RNA species that defend genome against invasive nucleic acid, and on germ granules—mysterious RNA-rich organelles that are required for germ cell maintenance. By integrating computational approaches and wet lab experiments, we are addressing several fundamental questions: How are piRNAs made and degraded? How do distinct small RNA pathways interact with one another to carry out transcriptome surveillance within germ granules? How are germ granules assembled, maintained and transmitted to offspring? Through this work, we aim to provide new insights into gene regulation, explore potential therapeutic strategies to human fertility, and train the next generation of scientists.
